15 Things to look out for around your home

 

Home maintenance requires quite some time and effort. It imposes a year-long obligation which can sometimes be really overbearing. Nevertheless, it is something we need to deal with.

When it comes to fixing your home, there are many things that need to be taken care of. Roof, windows, pavement, heating, home appliances; all these systems require special care and dedication. However, if you react accordingly, none of these things will be hard to deal with.   

Here is a quick list of all the important things you need to look out for:

  1. Windows – Make sure that there is no draft coming through them. If you have wooden frames, check if they haven’t started rotting. You can use silicone to fill any holes.
  2. Refrigerator – Seal on the door might be broken forcing the fridge to work overtime. This will have a negative impact on your motor. From time to time, make sure to clean the coils behind it.
  3. Washing machine – Another home appliance that requires some love. Check the hose behind it. If there is a leak in your bathroom, it is probably due to this.
  4. Doors – After a while, there is a chance that some of your doors will start squeaking. This isn’t a big issue and it can be remedied with WD-40.
  5. Bathtub – Stains will appear on your bathtub after a while. It can be fixed with cream of tartar and baking soda.
  6. Fire extinguishers – Even though the majority of us will never have the opportunity to use them, you still need to check them out once in a while making sure they have proper pressure.
  7. Gutters – During the year (especially autumn) a lot of debris will fall into your gutters. Clean them properly once in a while and check for leaks and damage.
  8. Garage doors – Another part of your home that requires regular maintenance, there are numerous things that can go wrong with your garage doors. Lubricate the coils from time to time; make sure that the door is well balanced and working properly.
  9. Roof – Shingles on your roof constantly get damaged. It is necessary to replace them as soon as you notice the problem. Inspect them at least once per year.
  10. Pavement – Sometimes, cracks may appear in the pavement. The problem starts when winter comes and ice start setting within these cracks widening them. Fill the holes as soon as you notice them.
  11. Pool – Pool and  require a lot of maintenance. Make sure to buy durable pumps such as Onga and Davey so that you won’t need to check on them as often.
  12. Heater – No matter how clean your water is, there will always be small particles within them. These particles fall on the bottom of the heater and can lead to damage. Empty your heater and clean it from time to time.
  13. Air conditioning – When it comes to your AC, it is necessary to clean the filter every once in a while. Companies usually recommend doing this once per year. However, if you’re in a hot part of the world, you might wish to do this more often.
  14. Smoke detectors – Most people don’t even have smoke detectors. But, if they do, they usually neglect them due to the fact that they never use them. Replace the batteries within smoke detector once in a while just so it keeps working.
  15. Sink – When it comes to sink, make sure to clean sink disposal from time to time. Ice cubes made from vinegar are a great solution for this issue.
