Basepaws: Cat DNA Testing At Home

Stephs Cheers and Jeers was provided the samples mentioned in this post in return for an unbiased review.

My mom has a stunning rescue cat white rescue cat named Lilly, For years we have thought she might have some Siamese in her because she is incredibly vocal and has a meow that is similar to that of a Siamese. I came across Basepaws and thought what an amazing popularity to learn more about Lilly!

Basepaws analyzes DNA taking from your cat’s hair and generates an easy to read report about their DNA. Basepaw will also constantly update your cats report as they discover more about your cat’s genetics because they save your cats DNA data and as they learn more about unknown gene they will keep you updated. The report will also include the Wild Kitten Index, which provides information about how much of your cat’s ancestry can be traced back to the various wild cat species. The analysis includes the review of 1,000s genetic variants that are represented more prevalently across the genome in within each of the species.

The kit features collection adhesives which are used to collect hair from the cat without causing pain or discomfort. I was a little worried at first that we wouldn’t be able to collect a sample from Lilly as she is very skittish but it was fast and easy and she didn’t even seem to notice.

I packaged up the strips and sent them back to the company! In approximately 2 months I should be receiving a report and I will make another post with the results!

You can purchase a Basepaws kit for $95 and that price includes the collection materials, DNA report and report updates. I will be sure to make another post with updates once I receive the report!
