My husband and I have been looking into purchasing a home now that we are expecting our first child. If you have found this post that most likely means you have already purchased your new home.

Congratulations on your new home! It’s easy to get wrapped up in the excitement of moving that you forget all the simple things you’ll need as you move into your new home.

When moving to your new home, you may need to start from scratch when it comes to stocking up on the essentials. Here’s a list of some items you do not want to find yourself without in your new home.

1. Cleaning supplies

No matter how clean the previous tenants left the home, chances are you’ll still need to do some cleaning before you settle in. A and a dustpan may seem obvious, but when you’re in the process of moving, it’s likely to slip your mind. A good broom can make a huge difference when it comes to sweeping up those spills or cleaning up after your children. You’ll also need to stock up on your  dish soaps, and toilet bowl cleaner. When it comes to cleaning supplies, you’ll want to make sure you’ve got everything to keep every room in the home clean as a whistle.

2. Shower Curtain

Make sure you purchase a shower curtain, or at least a shower liner, ahead of time. After moving day, there’s nothing like a refreshing shower to reward all your hard work. So, finding yourself without a shower curtain can be a major bummer as you don’t want to flood your new bathroom.

3. Plunger

A toilet plunger is one of those things you won’t know how bad you’ll need until you need it. No matter how good the plumbing is at your new home, a toilet plunger may still be necessary from time to time.  and keep a toilet plunger handy for any potential bathroom emergencies.

4. Can opener

You’ll want to keep a can opener on hand in the kitchen. Although many cans have that easy open top that no longer requires a can opener, you don’t want to find yourself in the

middle of preparing dinner only to discover you need a can opener to open the essential ingredient for the meal. Save yourself the stress and get yourself a can opener when shopping for kitchen essentials.

5. Trash cans and trash bags

When moving into a new home, you’ll be surprised how many trash cans you’ll need around the house. To make it easier to dispose of trash throughout your home you’ll want to outfit your kitchen, bathrooms, and laundry room with its own trash can. There are many different shapes and sizes when it comes to choosing the right trash can. There are simple plastic trash cans, or there are
with sensors to help avoid touching the can. Unpacking can create a lot of trash, so make sure you pick up some trash bags ahead of time.

6. Lightbulbs

Before you move into your new home, note what type of lightbulbs you’ll need around the house. While your new home may already have light bulbs in place, you want to make sure you’re prepared when the bulbs burn out.  You don’t want to walk into a completely dark home. Consider the type of light bulbs you’re purchasing. Energy-efficient or can help to use less energy and save you money on your electric bill.

7. Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

With a new home comes the added responsibility of safety. You’ll want to make sure you’re prepared for an emergency with smoke and carbon monoxide detectors throughout the home to detect a threat at the first sign of smoke.

8. Tool kit

Start building a basic tool kit before you move into your new home. When you start your home projects, you’ll find yourself in need of many different tools. Make sure you have the necessary tools: a hammer, a screwdriver, a drill, etc.

Moving into a new home is one of the most exciting life choices you can make! By having the right supplies, it can be much easier.
