Brief History of Valentine’s Day:
According to History.com, the origins of Valentine’s Day are shrouded in mystery but both Christian and ancient Roman traditions influenced it. There are numerous legends as to whom and what St. Valentine actually did as the Catholic Church at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred.
Lupercalia is a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as Romulus and Remus. This festival is celebrated on February 15th. At the end of the 5th century, Lupercalia was outlawed and February 14th was declared Valentine’s Day by Pope Gelasius.
Another fun fact about Valentine’s Day is that in France and England, it was thought that February 14th was the start of the mating season for birds, adding to much of the lore and ideas of love we associate with Valentine’s Day today.
