Dragons are something that hold a special place in my heart, growing up, my mother loved dragons and had a massive collection of them. I always found myself so fascinated by them and their whimsical and magical nature, so when I had the chance to check out A Day with the Dragons by Raven Howell, I jumped on the opportunity to share my joy of dragons with my son.
About the Author:
Raven Howell is an award-winning poet and author of over 30 children’s books. She writes for magazines such as Highlights, Cricket, and The School. She is also a journalist for Story Monsters Ink magazine and a writer for children’s educational publishers. Raven enjoys visiting students in schools and libraries and, most importantly of all, believes in magical dragons(like me!)
About the Illustrator:
Alexander Santos is a Brazilian illustrator with over 30 years of experience. He has illustrated for dozens of children’s books, several newspapers, school and literature books, and hundreds of children’s magazines. He has also created and illustrated puzzles for the magazine Recreio in Brazil. Alexander has designed children’s games and taught drawing for 11 years. He doesn’t remember when he first encountered dragons, but he hasn’t strayed far from them since discovering RPGs in the 80’s.
About The Book:
A Day with the Dragon follows two dragon brothers, Blue and Green, who have very different interests. Blue loves the sea, while Green prefers land. The book follows the brothers as they try to convince each other to try new things, step outside of their comfort zones, and learn the importance of compromise. Their adventures include spending time on the beach, encountering bugs, going sailing, and more. The book even touches on the importance of apologizing and, at the end, introduces a little brother character named Yellow.
The illustrations are beautiful and detailed, with vivid colors that make each page really bring this story to life.
My Review:
I found this book to be a beautiful story about compromise and “going with the flow.” Throughout the story, things don’t always go as planned, but the brothers still enjoy the time they spend together. In the end, they find common ground, and all three end up flying off into the sky.
I really like that there is a whole page about the importance of apologizing, as I think that is an important lesson for children to learn. My son and I both really enjoyed this book, both because of its message and its beautiful imagery.
