Better to be over prepared then under prepared:Putting together an emergency kit

Hurricane Irene was not very kind to my area when she came screaming through Vermont, The above video was taken less then 20 minutes from my house where I lived at the time. Hurricane Sandy devastated much of New England not long after Irene. Some places that just rebuilt got hit again by Sandy. I for one was lucky to not suffer any damage to my home and my family and friends were lucky as well, so many were not as lucky though.

After a recent talk with a blogger who had her home town destroyed by a tornado, I thought now would be a good time to put together an emergency kit, even if I never use it, Its still packed away in my spare bedroom in case I ever need it. I am hoping the worst situation I will have to use it in is a power outage(We have many of those where I live)

I started the emergency kit with mostly freebies I have collected over the past few years, and put them into a tote I had just lying around.
I saved some jugs, cleaned them and filled them with water
In plastic bags I put silverware and toiletries such as deodorant, body wipes and some body care samples
Candles are always an important thing to have in your emergency kit!
At the bottom I put a blanket
I am slowly going to add to this kit over time, I like the idea of this kit also because in case we ever have to evacuate  I can grab it and go.
Here are a list of things that are very important to include in any emergency kit:
Water(Atleast one gallon per person for three days)*I store two gallons in my emergency kit and store away more gallons under my sink*
Non Perishable Food
Battery Operate or hand crank radio
Flash lights with extra batteries
First aid Kit
Body wipes or moist towelettes(baby wipes work wonders as well!)
Manual can opener
Blankets
Matches and Lighters
Paper and plastic utensils
Multi Tool
Personal Care Items

If you live in a colder climate, packing away atleast one warm outfit per person is a good idea as well, Have an outfit that fits but you dont really see your self wearing it? pack it away in your emergency kit!

Do you have children? Packing away an coloring book or other activities for them will help them stay calm in an emergency.

Dont forget about the pets! be sure to pack away food and water for them as well!
